The way to answer - Past Papers

Answers from Marking scheme, this is not the final answer. Let's discuss how we have to write a proper answer. Most of the students think if they write what exactly there in the marking scheme they will get full marks. It's not like that, they need to consider the question's command word according to that they need to answer, such as, explain, describe or discuss. most of the students used to write as point form instead of answering accordingly.

Before I begin with any paper I would like to recall the AOs (Assessment Objectives) of the subject. The reason why we need the AOs to know when we answer a paper, that's the place where the answer pattern is hidden.

May/ June 2018 Paper 1 - 12 IGCSE ICT

As you can see question 1 is asking your direct knowledge. Not asking you to give reasons or analyse them. To answer this type of a question you must have good memorizing skills since it asking the AO1 type answer such as recall, select, communicate knowledge.
Firstly, if you are still practising past paper answering, it is better you collect all possible key short notes on the paper itself. Therefore, you can use this as a revision note at the later stage. I'll show you, how you have to do that.

Keep on doing the practice papers as above and once you start timing yourself make sure you just underline the key points which you need to answer and accordingly organize your answers with the Keywords and referring command words too.

This question also checks your AO1 ability. Let's talk about three main items given to fill the correct statement.

Laser
  • Laser printers are expensive to buy and maintain too.
  • Its quality is very high and fast printing.
  • It prints page per minute.
  • It uses the toner to print
  • This is very good to use for magazine cover printing.
  • This can print colour or black and white copies.
Dot Matrix
  • This is moderately expensive to buy, however, cheap to maintain.
  • This uses continuous stationery while using a ribbon to print.
  • This doesn't print colour prints.
  • This makes huge notice and can use in an industrial area.
3D printers
  • This uses Layering mechanism to print
  • Expensive to use
  • Use to make a physical £D model
  • Most of the medical pieces of equipment are made by 3D printers.

Let's discuss the next question.
Above three are types of networks which act in different ways. LAN and WLAN both are situated in the same geographical area however, it uses a different technique to communicate.
When LAN uses cable media WLAN use wireless media. LAN is secure than WLAN since its open for a hacker to enter easily.
WAN is the Wide Area Network which covers different geographical areas through the Internet and it uses satellites to transfer data.

Let's move to question number 4 and 5 now.

Question Number 5
This question is a very tricky question. Most of the students have misled because of the wording. Therefore, everyone needs to be more focus on question reading and understanding.

When the student sees the external part they will ignore the next part and start to answer if they see external only your answer will be mouse and monitor, but if you were further read, only you can see that it asks about external storage which changes the answer to CD RW and Hard Disk.
Next question is related to practical which you need practice in HTML and CSS codes. Many are saying that they don't need to remember coding, no need of typing coding so hardly, however, my opinion is until unless you get the concept of the code and thorough use the notepad and practice the code, so you will never miss even a single mark for these type of codes. Yes you can use any WYSIWYG once you are perfect in understanding nf remembering the code segments.

In this question, many students will lose 2 marks just because they don't look at the question critically. They look at the image part and get the marks but they forget that it's there inside the Table.
